We all trend to live in little bubbles and it is difficult to have a very good global picture of things. In the topic of climate change, we talk either too global or too local and very little times we stop to think either if our local solutions are valid for everyone or how the global solutions will be implemented locally.
Green hydrogen suffers too much of this polarization. On one hand, we talk a lot and we read many articles about how much hydrogen will be needed in a net-zero scenario but without putting a plan to do it. On the other hand, we discuss about the decarbonization of certain local sectors but without realizing the difficulty to do it in other regions.
At this point and to avoid a "delayism", we should all agree in a minimum quantity of green hydrogen to be produced, how to produce it cost-effectively and where to use it.
As I have discussed previously, I believe that 100 million tonnes of green hydrogen is a good figure to all agree, focusing on producing that hydrogen in those place where renewable electricity is cheap and abundant and to use it for sectors where only green hydrogen can be a decarbonised solution.
In line with this, we have written the following article at Ramboll. Do not hesitate to be in touch with us to further questions and discussions.
How we get to 100 million tonnes of green hydrogen
